When do the To Day flowers usually bloom?
Since mid-December every year, the flowers have bloomed, dyeing the forests. Also hillsides to every hamlet and village in Mu Cang Chai district, Yen Bai province.
How is the To Day flower unique?
To Day flower or “pang to day” in H’Mong language is wild peach blossom, considered one of the winter symbols of Mu Cang Chai. The flowers usually bloom on the occasion of the H’Mong people celebrating the national New Year. It’s about a month before the traditional Lunar New Year.
The flowers are thick with five petals, slimmer and longer than peach blossoms. As the weather gets colder, the pink color of the flowers becomes darker. The best time for flowers is about 10 days from budding. If it is later, the flowers will wither on the branches and the tree will begin to produce buds and leaves.
When the To Day trees lose all their leaves, only the pink color of flowers covers the branches. “In the midst of the cold and gloomy landscape of winter days, the deep pink color of the flowers makes the scene even more vibrant.”
The distribution of To Day flowers
The flower is naturally distributed in Mu Cang Chai and grows at an altitude of over 1,000 m above sea level. According to local people in Mu Cang Chai, the tree blooms according to the height distribution. Trees in higher areas bloom first, trees in lower areas bloom later. So La Pan Tan commune is the earliest flowering area.
Currently, flowers have bloomed in some places such as Pu Nhu village, La Pan Tan commune and Mu Cang Chai district center. In addition, some other places have many To Day trees. Like Thao Chua Chai village, Che Cu Nha commune, Mi Hang village, Mo De commune and Lao Chai commune.
The To Day flower season lasts about a month. It’s usually most beautiful 3 – 4 weeks after the flowers bloom. Now is the time when flowers bloom most beautifully, along with the influence of cold air on the northern provinces of Vietnam. So the flower colors are even more brilliant.
