Yen Thuy

Located in a semi-mountainous area surrounded by rocky mountains and a magnificent cave system, near Cuc Phuong national forest. Yen Thuy has a charming and attractive natural landscape with 12 ranked monuments, landscapes, and caves. Each landscape contains unique material and spiritual values, attracting a large number of domestic and foreign tourists.

1. Where is Yen Thuy?

Yen Thuy is a midland district of Hoa Binh province, about 85 km southeast of Hoa Binh city and about 90 km southwest of Hanoi capital. With geographical location:

  • The East borders Lac Thuy district
  • The West borders Lac Son district
  • The South borders Nho Quan district of Ninh Binh province
  • The North borders Kim Boi district.

2. How is Yen Thuy unique?

Yen Thuy is surrounded by mountain ranges and magnificent cave systems with charming nature. Besides, Yen Thuy is also the only district of Hoa Binh province adjacent to the majestic Northwest mountains.

With a cool natural climate, diverse cuisine, different cultures and famous monuments and landscapes. Yen Thuy has become one of the famous places, attracting many tourists when traveling to Hoa Binh.

3. When is the best time to travel to Yen Thuy?

The best season to travel to Yen Thuy, Hoa Binh is in the fall, from September to November. During this period, the weather in Yen Thuy is usually quite cool and pleasant, along with the surrounding natural landscape. The surroundings begin to turn the yellow color of fallen leaves.

However, depending on personal preferences, spring is also another option when plants start to turn green and flowers bloom everywhere, creating a fresh and lively picture. In addition, spring is also the time when traditional festivals often take place here. There are many fun, festive and cultural activities for visitors to participate in.

4. How to get to Yen Thuy?

4.1. By public transport

From Hanoi, visitors can travel by bus from bus stations such as My Dinh, Giap Bat, Yen Nghia to move to Yen Thuy. With a distance of about 90 km, the travel time takes about 2,5 – 3 hours.

Limousines offer more privacy and comfort, so they have higher ticket prices. The convenience of limousine service is that the car will pick up and drop off visitors at the place you request.

4.2. By personal vehicles

For tourists who want to drive their own car, the road to Yen Thuy is very easy to find and beautiful. From the inner city of Hanoi, you follow the road to Nga Tu So intersection, continue along Nguyen Trai street to reach Ha Dong. From Ha Dong address, you follow national road 6 to Chuc Son town about 18 km. Then turn left onto Hoa Son – Nguyen Van Troi street and then onto Highway 21A. From here, you just follow Highway 21A (also called Ho Chi Minh road) south about 65 km to Yen Thuy. The route for motorbikes is similar.

5. Sightseeings in Yen Thuy

5.1. Cave Pagoda – Van Quang Cave

Hang Pagoda in Yen Tri commune, Yen Thuy district is a famous temple here. The pagoda has a pure, quiet space with unique architecture, attracting a large number of tourists to visit and worship. In addition, because it is located in Van Quang cave, the pagoda is also widely known by the nickname Van Quang Dong.

5.2. Dinh Xam (Xam Communal House)

Xam Communal House – a long-standing famous communal house in Yen Thuy district. Built in the late 18th century to commemorate martial general Bui Van Khu during the Le Dynasty. Recently, the communal house has also been renovated and decorated more than before, attracting many tourists to visit. In addition, the Dinh Xam festival held on the 6th – 8th day of the first lunar month every year is also a unique cultural feature here.

5.3. Tac Duc Pagoda

Located at the foot of Kho Khoi mountain and nestled behind the canopy of majestic ancient rice trees in Yen Thuy district is the famous Tac Duc pagoda, where most Muong ethnic people come here to worship. The name has the meaning of bringing luck and protection to those with a good heart. This is a famous tourist destination that attracts most tourists, especially during Tet holidays.

5.4. Thien Long Cave

If you love grandeur and vast space, visit Thien Long cave, a national monument of Yen Thuy district. The cave includes a main palace with left and right places surrounding it. With light shining about 15m, creating a dim and shimmering scene in the cave.

In addition, the cave also has stalactites created millions of years ago, captivating and attracting more visitors.

5.5. Cuc Phuong National Park

Cuc Phuong National Park, a famous nature reserve in Vietnam, is surrounded by 3 provinces: Hoa Binh, Ninh Binh and Thanh Hoa. This place has an extremely diverse plant system, along with highly endangered animal species, helping visitors understand more about the vast natural world. Also it’s one of the most interesting tour trekking route in Vietnam.

6. Specialties when traveling to Yen Thuy

Coming to this beautiful land, besides discovering the majestic natural beauty, it would be a huge mistake not to enjoy the unique and mouth-watering specialties here. Typical of them are boiled pork, spring rolls with grapefruit leaves, buffalo meat with Lom leaves, upland sticky rice, rocky mountain snails,…

To this day, Muong people still like sour foods such as pickled tubers, pickled eggplants with fish, salted vegetables, pickled papaya and shrimp, and sour leaves cooked with fish. In particular, no Muong family lacks a jar of sour bamboo shoots to stir-fry and cook with fish, meat, chicken, duck, etc.

Coming to the Muong ethnic villages in Yen Thuy, visitors will enjoy meatballs stuffed with wild banana vegetables and buried in a charcoal stove, grilled stream fish, and malabar fruit (wild melon) dipped in sesame salt.
