Tram Chim National Park is one of the outstanding eco-tourism destinations of Dong Thap. 2. Some details about the ecosystem of Tram Chim National Park

Tram Chim National Park is located in the territory of 7 communes (Tan Cong Sinh, Phu Duc, Phu Tho, Phu Thanh A, Phu Thanh B, Phu Hiep), in Tram Chim town, Tam Nong district, Dong Thap province. With a total area of more than 7,500 hectares, Tram Chim is considered a typical miniature model of the Dong Thap Muoi region, which has a diverse ecosystem, and bears the characteristics of the Mekong River Delta.

The national park is divided into specific types of communities distributed interspersed with each other:

  • Lotus community
  • Heavenly rice
  • Tube cot
  • Energy, Musty Mouth
  • Melaleuca forests
  • Swamp.

Tram Chim National Park (Tam Nong district, Dong Thap province) is home to more than 230 bird species, including 32 rare species, 16 species in the red book. Among them is the vegetation with more than 130 different species, the water bird system stands out with more than 233 species, belonging to 25 genera and 49 families. 3. When is the best time to visit Tram Chim National Park?

The weather at Tram Chim National Park is characterized by “six months of dry grass and burning grass, six months of flooded white fields”, each season has a different unique beauty that captivates many tourists.

The period from September to December of the lunar calendar is the floating water season. This is considered the peak tourist season at the national park, this place attracts a huge number of visitors. This is your opportunity to admire the lush, green scenery of the natural forest. Admire the fields of lotus and water lilies in full bloom and the vivid picture of hundreds of species of birds gathering here.

In addition, the dry season is also an ideal time for visitors to watch the impressive dances of the Red-crowned Crane. The time to easily see red-crowned cranes is from February to May.

February every year is the best time to go to Tram Chim to watch the birds fly back. The flocks of birds here are as diverse and beautiful as a fashion show.Besides, tourism activities in Tram Chim take place all year round, but there are some typical flower seasons.

The season of purple rhizome flowers – flowers of a type of seaweed that lives in flooded areas – begins to bloom usually in late January, early February and lasts about 2 months.

Next is the season of golden yellow flowers, a type of field flower, blooming from March to May. The flowers bloom bright yellow throughout the field of dozens of hectares, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. During the flower blooming season, this place attracts a lot of tourists.

4. How to get to Tram Chim National Park?

To move to Tram Chim National Park ecotourism area, visitors will have to move to Tram Chim town, Tam Nong district, Dong Thap province.

Tram Chim town is only about 150 km southwest of Ho Chi Minh city center, the road is quite convenient. Visitors can choose many means of transportation such as passenger cars, cars, and motorbikes.

4.1 By Coach

This is the means of transportation chosen by many tourists because of its convenience. You can choose reputable bus companies on the Saigon – Dong Thap route such as Hoang Minh, Tam Quoc Minh. Travel time is about 3 to 4 hours, with ticket prices ranging from 120,000 – 180,000 VND/trip.

4.2 Personal vehicles (cars, motorbikes)

If visitors choose to travel by personal vehicle, they can refer to the following 2 routes:

From Ho Chi Minh City, you travel along the Trung Luong – Tan An – Tan Thanh highway. At My An – Moc Hoa intersection, you turn to Truong Xuan, drive a short distance and you will reach Tram Chim town. From here, you will see a sign leading to Tram Chim National Park. The route is quite easy, you can refer to the map, signposts or ask local people to get to the tourist area. Coming to Tam Nong district, you cross Tram Chim bridge, continue about 800m and you will meet the Tram Chim National Park conservation center on the left.

If you depart from Cao Lanh city, you will have to travel about 35 km to reach the national park. However, the road from Cao Lanh to Tram Chim is quite easy. You start in the city center (Cao Lanh city children’s park area on April 30 street), move along Highway 30 (QL30) to the intersection near Thanh Binh district medical center, then Turn right and you will reach Tram Chim.

4.3 By Plane

For tourists coming from the Central or Northern regions of Vietnam and wanting to explore the typical rustic beauty of the Western river region, flying is a reasonable choice.

You can travel to Can Tho airport or Tan Son Nhat airport, then choose the airport shuttle or travel by bus to get to Tram Chim town, Dong Thap.

5. Activities and experiences at Tram Chim National Park

5.1 Take a boat trip for sightseeing

Sitting on a canoe weaving along the green canal is always an activity that any tourist wants to experience when arriving at Tram Chim National Park.

Visitors can also see white and red water lilies spread over hundreds of hectares. When harvesting water lilies in Tram Chim, people will take the long stem from deep water so they have to bundle them into rings for easy transportation. Fresh water lilies can be used to make many delicious dishes such as salad, braised fish sauce, stir-fried garlic, and shrimp soup.

This is a very relaxing time, visitors can watch many birds flying right in front of them. Listen to the chirping sounds, or witness the sight of hundreds of white storks and mallard ducks flying into the air.

At Tram Chim, visitors will admire an ancient West with flocks of storks flying in the sky, fish splashing in the water and many native plant species that seem to have disappeared. Visitors can most easily encounter flocks of storks, which belong to the stork family and are a strictly protected species. Birds help farmers eliminate harmful organisms.

When they eat snails, they collect the shells in one place. In addition, Tram Chim also has storks, snake-necked birds, gray herons, and herons.

Arriving at the lookout tower, the boat will stop for visitors to climb to the upper floor to enjoy the immense green scenery of the national park. Just let your soul follow the wind, feel the closeness to nature and feel strangely peaceful.

5.2 Experience the flood season

Coming to Tram Chim during the flood season, visitors will be immersed in a lush, flooded landscape, all of which are full of vitality. The fields of lotus flowers and water lilies are glowing pink, and birds flock together to create a lively scene.

This is also an opportunity for you to participate in activities like rowing a dinghy, setting nets, laying thatch, fishing, harvesting rice, hunting field mice,… In addition, the flood season is also the breeding season for hundreds of bird species. With thousands of lovely bird’s nests of some species such as gongs, snake-necked red geese,… that you can easily see.

To visit the garden, visitors can choose to take a motorboat or a tugboat – a means of transport that is considered a Western yacht. The towing boat is designed with one boat in front controlled by a driver, pulling two boats behind. Passengers can admire the scenery and enjoy food right on the boat.

5.3 Watch red-crowned cranes in the dry season

The red-headed crane is considered a typical bird in the Tram Chim region. With outstanding colors and vibrant dances, flocks of red-crowned cranes will be an impressive highlight that no tourist wants to miss.

The dry season from December to May of the lunar calendar is when you can easily see this rare bird.

5.4. Take photos and visit the museum

Tourists come to Tram Chim not only to visit and admire the natural beauty but also to research and take photos. A photographer shares that taking photos of wild birds here requires patience and passion. “Sometimes it takes an hour of stalking to get as close as possible, but if you’re careless, they fly away,” he said. In addition, a good camera and lens are also factors that help photographers succeed. In addition to outdoor activities, right at the tourist operations center is the freshwater fish and bird museum.   • Plan your trip to Dong Thap and Tram Chim National Park early, to plan everything smoothly.
  • The West is famous for having a lot of mosquitoes, so don’t forget to apply anti-mosquito and insect repellent cream.
  • On the road in the tourist area, there are many muddy roads, so you should wear sandals to make it easier to move and clean.

9. Suggestion Sightseeing Itinerary

There are two travel routes with a distance of 12 km and 21 km, lasting from 1:30 and 3:00. Along the route, visitors will see a miniature Plain of Reeds with melaleuca forests, grass fields, ghost rice fields, and lotus fields.

Underwater, some plant species are difficult to find in the wild. Such as wall moss, foxtail seaweed, water lily, water bulbs, purple flower ear flowers, and royal jelly.

The tour route will stop at point C4 – located in the middle of the forest, a 16 m high observation deck helps visitors easily see the panorama from above. Next to it are shops with rustic dishes, typical of the river region.
