5. Exploring the Old House of Phung Hung in Hoi An

5.1 Overview of the house

Looking from the outside, the house has a tubular shape and a wide frontage, clearly expressing the owner’s desire and desire to “prosper and prosper”. The house is 2 floors high with 2 folds connecting each other in the Northwest direction, with 4 roofs.

This design was also very suitable and convenient for business and trade in ancient times. The main materials in construction are ironwood and other rare woods, giving the house a warm and prosperous brown coat. Right at the main door of the house are two extremely majestic doors. This door eye is both a decoration and a mascot to protect the house. According to spiritual beliefs, it has the role of guarding the house and chasing away bad things.

5.2 Exploring the unique architecture on the 1st floor

Previously, the first owner used the ground floor of the house for display and sales. Currently, the ground floor is a place to store antiques of the homeowner during his lifetime, and is also a place to receive guests. Visitors who come to “visit the house” can sit and rest on a luxurious set of tables and chairs made from precious wood placed in the middle of the house. The walls around the ground floor are decorated with delicate and artistic carvings. These wonderful carved details were created by the artisans of Kim Bong carpentry village.

The house’s column system is made up of 80 extremely sturdy ironwood trees. To reduce the house’s settlement and at the same time prevent termite damage, all house columns are placed on stone bases. This kick helps prevent contact between the column base and the ground, limiting damage.

5.3 Visiting the 2nd floor of the Old House of Phung Hung

Stepping up to the 2nd floor of the house, visitors will see a sacred and ancient feeling covering the whole room. This is where the homeowner places the altar of ancestors and Thien Hau Thanh Mau. A table is placed in front of the altars. The host always places seven marble dice in the bowl. Every time they go away, they roll the dice to decide the departure time.

Because it is located near the river, in the past it was easy to flood, so the attic floor has square openings, called “trap doors”. This door can be easily removed to facilitate the transportation of goods from the ground floor to the upstairs in case of flood.

Looking up, the roof is covered with yin and yang tiles. This type of tile:

  • Helps keep the house airy and cool in the summer, while at the same time, retaining heat well in the winter.
  • People carved the Carp images on the tiles. Carp is a symbol of luck, prosperity, and power in ancient Vietnamese, Japanese, and Chinese cultures.

A narrow corridor in the innermost room is the way to go to the 2nd floor. Surrounding the 2nd floor is a wide corridor system, all made of wood. The scientific arrangement of the stairs makes the house more spacious and airy.
