4. Legend and history of Thach Long Pagoda

Thach Long Pagoda has become a famous spiritual tourist destination in Northern Vietnam. Because of its extremely strange history. In the 18th century, people in Vi Huong commune used boats to bring Buddha statues to worship in Hoa Son village. When returning to Cao Ky commune, the boat turned around and could not move. They had struggled until it was dark and everyone had to stop and rest.

The next morning, when they woke up, they could no longer see the Buddha statue. Those who go to process the statue burn incense and pray. Then they asked the Buddha to reveal his presence and reveal where he is located. Before the prayer ended, the incense stick flew to the other side and headed towards the mountain. Following that direction, people see a very spacious, clean and beautiful cave. And they saw Buddha is located at the highest peak. Feeling the mystical fulfillment of the Buddha, the people built a pagoda here. And they named it Thach Long – meaning stone dragon. This meaning is a pagoda located in a stone cave.

During the resistance war against the French. Thach Long Pagoda was also used by the Vietnamese army as a weapons warehouse for 30 years. This is a top secret location that was extremely safe and secure. In 1951, Uncle Ho stopped by here and advised the soldiers to be absolutely vigilant and protect the warehouse well.

This event is an important historical milestone for the people of Cho Moi district. Because this is the first and only time Uncle Ho visited the district. It was not until 1986 that the local government and people were able to restore the pagoda. At the same time, they do a few additional items to serve the spiritual needs of the local people as well as visitors.
