Tan Uyen is one of the places with many attractive destinations in Lai Chau province – Vietnam. 1. Where is Tan Uyen?

Tan Uyen is a mountainous district located in the east of Lai Chau province in the Northwest region of Vietnam. About 75 km southeast of Lai Chau city and about 400 km southwest of Hanoi capital. With geographical location:

  • The North borders Tam Duong district.
  • The South borders Than Uyen district.
  • The East borders Sa Pa district (Lao Cai province).
  • The West borders Sin Ho district.

2. How is Tan Uyen unique?

Tan Uyen district has a natural area of 897.33 km², including 10 ethnic groups living together: Thai, Kinh, Mong, Kho Mu, Dao, Lao, Day, Tay,…

Tan Uyen has a complex divided terrain, which can be divided into two main areas. The eastern area is the western slope of the Hoang Lien Son range, where is very famous with Fansipan mountain peak, high mountains, rugged terrain, with steep slopes. The western area is a low mountainous area, with an average altitude of 600 – 1,800m. Interspersed with mountains and hills are small plots of land with terraces and complex shapes.

Tan Uyen also attracts tourists thanks to the traditional festivals of ethnic minorities. Such as the Long Tong festival, praying for good crops of the Giay ethnic group; Celebration of the falling rain (Om dom, Om dim); Rain Praying Ceremony (Pa Sum); Ceremony to ask for the fire of the Kitchen God; Mah grí festival and Velr guong dance, rice soul worshiping ceremony, rice mother (Hmal, Hngo) of the Kho Mu ethnic group…

3. When is the best time to travel to Tan Uyen?

Characterized by the climate of Northwest Vietnam, the time to travel to Tan Uyen is similar to the appropriate time to travel to the Northwest.

  • Go around September-October to combine watching the ripe rice season with the fields, the seemingly endless stretches of terraced fields with brilliant yellow color.
  • Go in the spring, around January-February to see fading peach forests, apricot forests, plum forests, and banyan forests with pink and white colors filling the space. Moreover, this is also the season of traditional folk festivals taking place with countless interesting and exciting activities.

Note: Tourists should avoid traveling during the rainy seasons of the Northwest region, especially when storms or tropical depressions cause landslides and flood waters in rivers and streams rise, endangering tourist’s travel itinerary.

4. How to get to Tan Uyen?

4.1 By personal vehicle

From Hanoi, you have 2 options to go to Lai Chau:

  • The first option goes through Road 32, starting from Hanoi to Son Tay, through Phu Tho and then to Nghia Lo, Mu Cang Chai, Than Uyen and then to Tan Uyen. Choose this option if you plan to explore Nghia Lo or watch the ripe rice season in Mu Cang Chai. If you choose this option, the distance will be longer (about 420 km) and the time will be longer. This distance is suitable for traveling by motorbike or car.
  • The second option is to use the Hanoi – Lao Cai highway, then go to Sa Pa and cross O Quy Ho pass to get to Lai Chau. This second option will reduce the travel distance by about 40-50 km, time by about 4 hours because the Hanoi – Lao Cai route is completely on the highway. On this route, you can only travel by car.

4.2. By public transport

Tan Uyen is about 400 km from Hanoi, currently there are about 10 bus companies operating on the Hanoi – Lai Chau route, buses usually depart from My Dinh bus station, there are also some companies with buses departing from the bus station. Giap Bat. With the above distance, the travel time takes about 7-8 hours depending on the bus company. Normally, passenger buses usually depart at night and arrive at Tan Uyen in the morning so you can optimize your sightseeing time.

5. Sightseeings & things to do in Tan Uyen

5.1. Tan Uyen tea hill

Tan Uyen tea hill is located along Highway 32, with a scale of up to 2,000 hectares and an age of 40-50 years. Nam Kang Ho Tao has an altitude of 2,881m and is a mountain peak in the Northwest mountains of Vietnam. The mountain peak is located in Thao A village, Ho Mit commune, Tan Uyen district, Lai Chau province. Nam Kang Ho Tao location is located between the boundary of Lai Chau and Lao Cai with complex terrain because it has to overcome many slippery cliffs.

The road to Nam Kang Ho Tao also goes through primeval forests covered with green moss. Therefore, you need to use your strength to climb this journey. Because it is very arduous, much more difficult than other difficult arcs. Such as Bach Moc Luong Tu, Pu Ta Leng,… This is one of the trekking routes considered by trekkers to be the most worth experiencing in Vietnam.

6.1. Pork mixed with sour leaves

Chua leaves are available all year round in the forest. Take them home and pound them, add chili and Doi seeds. Mix well with boiled pork, eat deliciously without getting bored. This is a delicious dish of the White Thai people in Lai Chau.

6.2. Grilled stream fish

To make delicious grilled stream fish, one must choose fresh, fatty stream fish, if it is carp, even better. The fish is shaved clean of scales, the belly is not cut, but the back is cut so that when grilled, the fish will be soft and easy to pick when grilled. After taking the honey, wash it, marinate it, and stuff it with spices. Stream fish usually only eat moss, leaves and crustaceans. 6.3. Smoked pork

6.4. Hoa ban bamboo shoot salad

6.5. Purple sticky rice

Purple sticky rice is made by the skillful hands of Thai and Day women… with their own secrets. From the fragrant upland sticky rice grains, the large grains are not sticky, and have a sweet fragrance, wash them clean and soak them in plain water for 6 – 8 hours. The distinctive and attractive purple color of sticky rice is dyed with a plant called Khau plug (this plant is only found in mountainous areas).

In addition to the delicious, greasy taste that is not boring, purple sticky rice is also attractive because of the color and texture of forest leaves. According to the experience of ethnic people in Lai Chau, the Khau plug plant used in sticky rice also has the effect of treating intestinal diseases and improving health very well.
