1. Where is Phu Thong Fort historical site?

Phu Thong Fort is located in Phu Thong town, Bach Thong district, Bac Kan province, Vietnam. About 300 m from Phu Thong Junction. It’s located at the intersection of National Highway 3 with Provincial Road 258, from Phu Thong to Cho Ra – Ba Be. About 19 km northeast of Bac Kan city and the capital Hanoi. About 185 km north.

2. How is Phu Thong Fort historical site unique?

During the resistance war against the French colonialists, Bac Kan was a resistance base and a key area in the French colonialists’ plans to attack Viet Bac. Especially during the Viet Bac Autumn-Winter campaign in 1947.

The Phu Thong Fort relic has great significance to the Vietnamese revolution. Here on the morning of October 7, 1947, the French Expeditionary Force with 1,200 troops from the parachute corps. Led by a French Lieutenant Colonel, parachuted into Bac Kan town, with the intention of entering the war zone. North Vietnam.

They marched to occupy, built fortified posts with a solid defensive trench system. With secure guard posts, and a communication system – with a full range of weapons ready to attack all areas.

The Vietnamese army raided Phu Thong station three times, these were the first attacks on the station that affirmed the maturity of the Vietnamese people’s army. At the same time, this is also a practice session to learn from experience to destroy the Dien Bien Phu stronghold. Defeating the invading French colonialists with the historic victory of Dien Bien Phu “resplendent in five continents, shaking the earth” in 1954.

3. When is the best time to visit Phu Thong Fort historical site?

4. How to get to the Phu Thong Fort relic site?

4.1. From Hanoi To Bac Kan City

From Hanoi, move to Bac Kan in two directions:

  • Follow old National Highway 3 (about 3 hours travel time, accessible by car and motorbike).
  • Follow the Hanoi – Thai Nguyen highway then continue on National Highway 3, about 2 hours (can only go by car). Passenger buses depart from My Dinh station (Hanoi). You can choose bus companies running the route Hanoi – Bac Kan or Hanoi – Cao Bang.

4.2 From Bac Kan city to the historical site of Phu Thong Fort

When you arrive in Bac Kan city, you can rent a motorbike to continue to Phu Thong Fort historical relic according to the instructions below. The distance is not too far, traveling by motorbike will give you the opportunity to admire the natural beauty on both road sides. You will be proactive in your sightseeing schedule.

Starting from the center of Bac Kan city, you follow Vo Nguyen Giap street in the Northeast direction for about 4 km, then coming to a roundabout. From here, you enter the National Highway 3 lane. You continue to move on Highway 3 north about 15 km and then come to Phu Thong Market intersection. You turn left onto provincial road TL258 and continue about 500 meters to reach the historical site of Phu Thong Fort.

5. Fierce battles took place at Phu Thong Fort

To defeat the French colonialists’ plan to occupy and pacify the mountainous region of North Vietnam. From 1947 to 1948, the Vietnamese army raided and attacked Phu Thong Fort three times.

  • The First Raid: Took place on the night of November 30, 1947. Vietnamese soldiers coordinated with local militia and guerrillas to attack Phu Thong Fort. They had killed 15 enemies and wounding 35. On Vietnamese side, 5 officers and soldiers sacrificed their lives.
  • The Second Raid: Took place on the night of March 12, 1948. Reinforced by the main force, the Vietnamese army destroyed most fortifications and barracks in the enemy base. It’s caused casualties and casualties nearly 70 enemies.
  • The third raid: This was the largest scale battle on Phu Thong Fort directed by the General Command. The battle took place on the evening of July 25, 1948 by Battalion 11 of Regiment 308 under the command of comrade Vu Yen. Coordinated with Battalion 55 and Ba Be Company to carry out the attack with strong firepower, destroying and wounding 3/4 of the enemy troops. Destroying the fortification system, obstacles, and houses in the station. On the Vietnamese side, 109 comrades died. The battle created pressure, forcing the enemy to withdraw from Bac Kan town.

6. Historical significance of the victory at Fort Phu Thong

The attack on Fort Phu Thong was the Vietnamese army’s first battalion-scale, solid fire attack. Although we did not win completely, the battle of Phu Thong on July 25, 1948 was extremely important.

This is a training exercise for the Vietnamese army to counter the “small base” defense tactics of the French colonialists. At the same time, it marks the maturity and development of the Vietnamese army in terms of capabilities and combat methods.
