1. Where is Phu Cam Church?

Phu Cam Church was on Phuoc Qua hill, located at 1 Doan Huu Trung, Phuoc Vinh ward, on the southern bank of the Perfume River, Hue City, Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam. About 95 km northwest of Da Nang city.

2. History of ferry formation and development of Phu Cam church

The origin of this place is Phu Cam chapel, built by Father Langlois in 1682. Initially, it was only built with thatch and bamboo located on the banks of the An Cuu river. But two years later, when conditions were more favorable, this priest bought land on Phuoc Qua hill to build a new, more solid project.

In 1898, after more than two centuries, experiencing many historical events, Bishop Eugène Marie Allys came here to continue developing the church. In 1902, he began building Phu Cam church in the Gothic architectural style. However, for many reasons and with more and more local parishioners, the church was changed again.

After many ups and downs of time and historical milestones. In 1960, Archbishop Peter Martino Ngo Dinh Thuc assumed the position of Archbishop of Hue, and he carried out a plan to rebuild a new church. After 3 years, he dissolved the old church and built a new church according to the design of architect Ngo Viet Thu. That drawing is also the architecture of Phu Cam today. However, it was not until May 2000 that this place was truly completed.

3. Unique architectural features of Phu Cam church

The church has the classic shape of a cross, the top of the cross is facing south, and the foot is facing north, this is also the main direction of the church. The main facade has a symmetrical layout with two tall bell towers on both sides.

The church was built with modern techniques, mainly reinforced concrete. But mixed with traditional materials such as stone, wood, and terracotta. Everything seems different but blends together to add vitality to this place.

The pillars supporting the cathedral’s roof are curved on both sides and rise up to form a dome. It looks like two hands clasped in prayer. Both sides of the wall are adorned with images of the life of Jesus. The church’s sanctuary can accommodate up to 2,500 people. It can be seen that the scale of this church at that time was extremely large.

Above the domes, it is adorned with extremely prominent blue glass edges. It is like a highlight that adds magic when light shines from outside. As for the main altar, it is placed close to the innermost concave part of the church. High above is a cross made of old pine wood, and on it is the image of Jesus being crucified.

The ancient capital of Hue is famous for its mausoleums, temples, and religious buildings with ancient architecture imbued with Vietnamese imprints. But Phu Cam church has its own unique features with its Western architectural style mixed with a bit of antiquity. That makes a difference and attracts more and more tourists to stop at Phu Cam.
