1. Where is Pac Nam?

Pac Nam is a mountainous district located in the north of Bac Kan province, in the Northeast region of Vietnam. About 85 km from Bac Kan city and about 250 km north of Hanoi capital. With geographical location:

  • The East borders Nguyen Binh district, Cao Bang province.
  • The West borders Na Hang district, Tuyen Quang province.
  • The North borders Bao Lam and Bao Lac districts, Cao Bang province.
  • The South borders Ba Be district, Bac Kan province.

2. How is Pac Nam unique?

With the potential of natural strengths such as mountains, rivers and streams, the climate is clean and mostly unaffected by outside influences. In addition to being located adjacent to Cao Bang and Tuyen Quang provinces, Pac Nam district has great advantages in collaborating to develop products and promote sustainable tourism development.

Coming to Pac Nam, visitors will be captivated by the beauty of terraced fields lying across the hillsides. Following Provincial Road 258B, right at the gateway of Pac Nam district, visitors can admire the magnificent terraced fields bearing the beauty of the Northwest mountains and forests. Especially at the top of Keo Diep pass, looking down, visitors can see all the magnificence and poetry of the terraced fields embracing the hills.

3. When is the best time to travel to Pac Nam?

Every season in Pac Nam is very fresh, cool and has its own unique appeal. Therefore, you can choose to travel to Bac Kan at any time of the year. The most ideal time is from September to April next year, because this is the time when this land has the most wonderful natural scenery.

During this period, the weather is neither too hot nor too cold, the air is extremely pleasant and fresh.

  • In September-October: This is the season of ripe rice, the whole space seems to be bright with shiny yellow color stretching across the terraced fields.
  • In November-December: This season is also winter, traveling here, you also have the opportunity to hunt clouds. Immerse yourself in the majestic scenery with a sea of floating clouds.
  • In January-February: All over the mountains and forests seem to be wearing a colorful “new shirt”. You have the opportunity to see the forests of peach, apricot, pear, etc., with countless flowers radiating fragrance and blooming. This is also the season where traditional folk festivals take place, you have the opportunity to experience cultural activities and traditional folk games when traveling here.

4. How to get to Pac Nam?

4.1 From Hanoi to Bac Kan city

Bac Kan is 165 km from Hanoi. From Hanoi to Bac Kan there are two routes:

  • Route 1: Follows old National Highway 3 (takes about 3 hours to travel, can go by car and motorbike).
  • Route 2: Follow Hanoi – Thai Nguyen highway then continue on National Highway 3, about 2 hours (only by car).

Passenger buses depart from My Dinh station (Hanoi). You can choose bus companies running the Hanoi – Bac Kan or Cao Bang route. These vehicles often pass through most famous tourist destinations in Bac Kan.

4.2 From Bac Kan city to Pac Nam

Starting from Bac Kan city, you move along National Highway 3 north about 20 km, then reach Phu Thong intersection, Bach Thong district, then turn onto provincial road DT258. From here, you just move northwest about 35 km to Ba Be bus station in Cho Ra town, Ba Be district, then turn right onto National Highway 258. You continue to travel on Highway 258 in the Northwest direction for about 37 km to reach the Pac Nam area.

5. Sightseeings & things to do in Pac Nam

5.1 Mu La flagpole

Mu La Flagpole – an attractive tourist destination with extremely beautiful natural scenery, imbued with the culture of the Pac Nam H’Mong ethnic people. At the beginning of spring, around January 13 and 14 every year, there will be a festival held at the top of the pass in Lung Phac village.

Coming to Mu La Festival, visitors will have the opportunity to participate in folk games, cultural and artistic activities here. These include bull fighting, goat fighting, shuttlecock tossing and enjoying folk songs, dancing, etc.

5.2 Admiring the terraced fields

One of the characteristic features when travelling to Pac Nam is the terraced fields. It has been around for a long time and people here are constantly cultivating and expanding their fields. Terraced fields can be said to be a landscape of mysterious beauty and contain profound meanings about the connection between humans and nature.

6. Specialties when traveling to Pac Nam

When traveling to Mu La, visitors will not only admire the wonderful natural landscape. But also have the opportunity to enjoy specialties in this beautiful land.

6.1 Sticky rice

Xoi Dam Deng is a unique type of sticky rice cooked from upland sticky rice and all the colors of the sticky rice are created entirely from the scent of plants. The sticky rice grains are shiny but not wet. When cooled, the sticky rice grains tighten but are still soft, flexible and fragrant.

People here often eat sticky rice with sesame salt or shrimp paste. If you have the opportunity to go to Bac Kan on holidays or New Year, remember to enjoy sticky rice to feel the flavor of the mountains and forests here.

6.2 Grilled fish

The rivers and streams in Pac Nam are naturally blessed with many fish. People often catch fish and then process them into many special delicious dishes. People choose a fish as small as a thumb, which is both similar to goby and similar to the flatfish in the lowlands to make grilled fish. The fish meat is white, firm and has a sweet taste.

The process of preparing grilled fish is also quite time-consuming. First, people choose fish of equal size, gut them, clean them, dry them in the sun, and then skewer the fish into skewers. Next, just bring grilled fish skewers to enjoy. Grilled fish is often dipped in chili sauce and enjoyed with a cup of corn wine.

6.3 Banh Duc cake

The Banh Duc dish of the Tay ethnic people in Cong Bang commune, Pac Nam district has long become familiar to residents and tourists. With unique characteristics.
