1. Where is Nghia Lo?

Nghia Lo is a mountainous district located in the west of Yen Bai province, Vietnam. About 77 km southwest of Yen Bai city and about 210 km northwest of Hanoi capital. With geographical location:

  • The East and North border Van Chan district, Yen Bai province.
  • The West and South border Tram Tau district, Yen Bai province.

2. How is Nghia Lo unique?

Nghia Lo has relatively flat terrain, inclined from West to East, from South to North. With an average altitude of 250 m above sea level, surrounded by high mountains.

3. When is the best time to visit Nghia Lo?

4. How to get to Nghia Lo from Hanoi?

4.1 By personal vehicle

If traveling by motorbike, you can take route 32. From Hanoi to Son Tay towards Trung Ha bridge, go to Thanh Son. Then Tan Son – Thu Cuc, straight along Highway 32 to Nghia Lo town. Travel time is about 4-5 hours for a distance of 180km.

If you go by car, you can follow the Hanoi – Lao Cai highway, turn off at Yen Bai City intersection. Then follow Highway 37 to reach Nghia Lo.

4.2 By public transportation

From Hanoi, if you want to go directly through Nghia Lo, you can choose some bus routes to Lai Chau. However, you need to contact the bus company directly to ask clearly, there are some bus routes they will use. Hanoi – Lao Cai Expressway so we don’t go through Route 32 like before. Any bus route to Mu Cang Chai will definitely go through Nghia Lo.

Another option is that you can take a bus to Yen Bai city. From here, you can take the bus routes running within Yen Bai province to Nghia Lo. This option takes a bit of work, but the time is more flexible because there are more routes running.

5. Sightseeings in Nghia Lo

5.1 Sa Ren village

Sa Ren is a village located along the banks of Thia stream, gurgling all year round by the green Nam Thia stream. It only takes about 2 hours by car to visit and experience the Sa Ren village community tourism site. A place where only black Thai people live and still retains extremely unique traditional cultural features.

5.2 Chao Ha village

5.5 Muong Lo Field

Highway 32 winds through the Northwest mountains of “clear mountains and clear water”. High mountains, deep abysses, vast forests and reeds. Then like a miracle, the national highway suddenly entered a flat field with waves of Muong Lo rice. Be amazed by the smooth, shiny sunlight stretching to the foot of the distant mountain. About 80 km west of Yen Bai city, Muong Lo field is located in the heart of Nghia Lo town and Van Chan district. Muong Lo is the second largest field in the northern mountains, only after Muong Thanh field in Dien Bien province.

Going down Highway 32 with endless thoughts about Muong Lo, Yen Bai. Then be surprised to witness the beauty of ripe golden rice fields, gently sloping towards the mountains. 5.6 Muong Lo Market

As the center of trade and goods exchange in the region. The shops, stores and markets have formed a quite vibrant local commercial system. During the French colonial rule in 1935, Nghia Lo market was built to become the second largest market in Yen Bai province.

After the town was re-established, Muong Lo market was planned, invested, and rebuilt to become one of the largest commercial centers in Yen Bai province. The goods here are quite rich and diverse.

Besides modern industrial products. There are also many agricultural products and traditional handicraft products that serve the essential needs of the people and trade. Muong Lo market can be called a wholesale market. Because it partly meets the needs of exchanging goods in the region and surrounding areas.

5.7 Nghia Lo Fort Relics

When mentioning the history of Nghia Lo Cang and Fort. We refer to the place Van Chan, it is now in Nghia Lo Town. This mentions the history of this place during the resistance war against the French in the 40s of the twentieth century.

With the intention of extinguishing the revolutionary movement. The French colonialists set up “special labor” camps to gather patriots. After Cang Ba Van (Thai Nguyen) was dissolved, the French colonialists brought imprisoned patriots to Nghia Lo.

In January 1945, construction was completed. Looking at the overall scene at this time, Nghia Lo post looks like a vertical box with 3 long rows of houses. Two rows are where male political prisoners are detained, while the inside is where female political prisoners are detained. Outside is the permanent place and next to it is the guard station of green loincloth soldiers.

Surrounding the entire Cang Don area is a barbed wire fence, outside the fence is a deep tunnel with spikes. The Cang corner basin has a tall hut that is carefully guarded day and night.

6.2 Five-color sticky rice

Five-color sticky rice brings together traditional and modern values. It carries the meaning of the concept of the universe, the philosophy of yin and yang and the noble meaning of life. Red sticky rice symbolizes desire. Purple sticky rice symbolizes the rich earth. Yellow sticky rice symbolizes fullness and prosperity. Green sticky rice symbolizes the green color of the Northwest mountains and forests. White sticky rice symbolizes pure and faithful love.

Cooking sticky rice is put on a plate or presented in different ways with 5 colors. The five colors assembled on a petal-shaped raspberry symbolize the theory of yin and yang. The Five Elements, and at the same time express the desire for love, faithful love, and love for mother and father of the Thai Tay ethnic group.

6.3 Pa Pinh Top (Grilled stream fish)

Coming to Nghia Lo land where many Thai ethnic people live. You must definitely try Pa Pinh top, also known as grilled fish dish.

Pa Pinh top can be commonly called grilled fish on bamboo sticks. Usually Thai people in Nghia Lo will choose carp or Ngoi Thia mudfish to make this dish. 6.4 Muong Lo roasted grasshoppers

There are many ways to prepare delicious dishes from grasshoppers. But crispy roasted grasshoppers are still the most popular specialty of the people here. To have a delicious, crispy roasted grasshopper specialty, you must first prepare the grasshoppers.

“Picking off the wings, breaking off the legs, removing the head, pulling out the intestines” are the 4 basic steps to create the shape of a grasshopper on the drinking table. The remaining part of the grasshopper after being cleaned looks strange and dense. Just like the cocoon of a mulberry silkworm. After pre-processing, the grasshoppers were washed, drained and then placed in the pan.

First, the grasshoppers are braised with sour bamboo shoot broth (or rice vinegar) over a simmering fire. Drain the water, immediately add fat (or cooking oil), stir well on the stove over high heat. When you hear a crackling sound, it means the grasshoppers are cooked and crispy. Add enough soup powder (or fish sauce, seasoning…) along with MSG, a little fresh chili and stir quickly. Finally, add finely chopped lemon leaves, stir well until the lemon leaves are well done, then remove from the pan. Roasted grasshoppers are dark yellow and very fragrant.

6.5 Crispy fried crickets

In the 7th lunar month, when Muong Lo longan is ripe, the longan stink bug season has ended. The natural showers suddenly lighten and lengthen to enter the lunar new year. Young grass begins to sprout and the crickets become plump, shiny, and greasy, and cricket dishes become the main dish in restaurants.

6.6 Muong Lo black chung cake

The Thai ethnic people made the cake here with the meaning of expressing the gratitude of children and grandchildren to their ancestors and heaven and earth. This specialty cake is indispensable on the offering tray to ancestors, heaven and earth every spring.

Thai black banh chung is passed down from father to son for many generations. When Tet comes, eat a piece of black Banh Chung. The smell of rice mixed with charcoal, black sesame flowers. The sweetness makes the eater feel like enjoying it. The smell of grass, fields, sky and nature in Western Yen Bai.
