1. Where is Na Ri?

Na Ri is a district located in the Eastern region of Bac Kan province, Vietnam. About 72 km east of Bac Kan city center and about 200 km north of Hanoi capital.

In the district, there is National Highway 279 running through the Northwest direction, connecting Na Ri district with Ngan Son, making it easier for visitors to explore Na Ri Bac Kan.

  • The North borders Ngan Son district.
  • The South borders Cho Moi district and Thai Nguyen province.
  • The East borders Binh Gia and Trang Dinh districts (Lang Son province).
  • The West borders Bach Thong district.

2. How is Na Ri unique?

Na Ri district is located at an average altitude of about 550 meters above sea level, sloping and gradually lowering towards the Southwest – Northeast. With 90% of the area being mountainous, when traveling here, visitors will feel the ruggedness and majesty of the terrain here. From the vast forests to the green hills and mountains, everything creates a new and different Na Ri, full of attraction.

Thanks to its mountainous terrain and tropical monsoon climate, Na Ri is cool and has pleasant weather all year round. This is a common characteristic of many provinces in the Northwest region of Vietnam. It’s also a factor that helps the district’s tourism develop. International and Vietnamese visitors often tend to go to places with cool, fresh landscapes and climates like this to experience and explore.

During the journey to explore Na Ri Bac Kan, visitors will return to a wild and majestic land, admiring the beautiful scenery of Bac Kan province. Traveling on the roads, you will pass through lush green forests, stopping at any point to admire the scenery and take photos.

Coming to Na Ri land, you will encounter green valleys, cool small streams and simple houses of indigenous people. This is also the residence of the Tay, Nung, H’Mong, Dao, Kinh people,… they cultivate upland fields, living in harmony with nature.

3. When is the best time to travel to Na Ri?

Each season of the year, Na Ri has its own unique characteristics to attract tourists. However, you should come in the spring to be able to participate in many special festivals, especially the Long Tong festival. This is a festival held to pray for favorable weather, good harvests and people living in peace and health.

If you are a lover and want to participate in Bac Kan markets, choose the third month of the lunar calendar to come to Na Ri. At this time, a traditional fair takes place in Xuan Duong commune, with only one session per year, on March 25 of the lunar calendar.

The market sells all essential life items. But not simply a place to exchange and trade goods, Xuan Duong fair also became a place to meet and interact, and find partners for indigenous people.

Meanwhile, if you come to Na Ri in the spring, you will enjoy many unique festivals, imbued with the cultural identity of the Tay, Nung, and Dao ethnic groups. The purpose is to pray for good weather and good weather so that the crops will be good and people will have health and peace. The most prominent is the Long Tong festival in Pjoo village in Lam Son commune.

Participating in those festivals, you will understand more about the daily life and customs of the local people.

4. How to get to Na Ri?

Na Ri is about 200 km from Hanoi. From Hanoi to Bac Kan, there are main directions:

  • Follow old National Highway 3 (about 3.5 hours travel time, accessible by car and motorbike).
  • Follow the Hanoi – Thai Nguyen highway then continue on National Highway 3, about 2.5 hours (can only go by car).

Passenger buses depart from My Dinh station (Hanoi). You can choose bus companies running the Hanoi – Bac Kan or Cao Bang route. These vehicles often pass through famous tourist destinations.

For tourists from Ho Chi Minh City and other provinces in the South or Central of Vietnam, the most reasonable way to travel is to fly to Hanoi and follow the instructions above.

5. Sightseeing & Things to do in Na Ri

5.1. Kim Hy Nature Reserve

Possessing an area of over 14,000 hectares. Kim Hy nature reserve stretches from Vu Muon and Cao Son communes (of Bach Thong district) to Luong Thuong, An Tinh and Con Minh communes (of Na Ri district).

Kim Hy Nature Reserve is one of the ideal eco-tourism destinations for tourists who are passionate about exploration and adventure. The tourist route here includes 7 destinations: Minh Tinh Cave, Tat Chat Waterfall, Bat Cave, Khuoi Cai Waterfall, Nam Cao Cave, Lung Sien, Nghien Vu Muon Forest.

This place still preserves the pristine and interesting natural state, without any intervention from humans. And an extremely rich ecosystem of rare animals, plants. Not only that, this reserve is in the middle of Bac Kan mountains and forests. But also famous for its wealth of mineral resources, especially gold.

Visitors will admire the clear, cool streams, stone caves with sparkling stalactites sculpted by the hands of “Mother of Nature” and see many rare and unique flora and fauna throughout the tour.

5.2. Na Dang Waterfall

Na Dang Waterfall has water flowing from the top of the mountain at a height of over 100m so it can be easily seen and viewed from afar. The water at the waterfall is always clear and green, the charming natural scenery creates an extremely peaceful and pleasant space, very suitable as a place to rest and relax.

5.3. Tien Cave

Tien Cave is one of the stops that tourists definitely cannot miss when visiting Na Ri. Here, visitors will admire natural stalactite caves that are shimmering and magical, mixed with a bit of magic and mystery. The origin of the cave is associated with ancient legends, many folk stories about the birth of this cave.

The cave goes deep into the mountain about 60m, with an altitude of about 30-50m. Looking from a distance, the cave looks like a young woman sleeping soundly. In particular, stepping inside the cave, you cannot help but be surprised at the charm created by nature.

5.4. French Fort – Po Pai historical relic site.

The French post in the old town of Yen Lac town – where the French colonialists set up their rule from 1895 – 1947. It’s Po Pai and located in Cu Le commune – the evacuation and working place of the Na Ri District Party Committee during the revolutionary period. There are also historical relics of Po Kep, Na Ri house,… which are destinations associated with the fighting history of the people of this district.

6. Specialties when traveling to Na Ri

6.1. Na Ri Dong vermicelli

Made from pure arrowroot starch grown on Ang Toong pass soil. Through skillful hands, Na Ri people have created a very fragrant, delicious, chewy vermicelli dish by hand, completely keeping the natural color (opaque or yellow), without using food coloring.

6.2. Peng Pha Cake

Coming to Na Ri in the spring, you will enjoy Peng Pha cake. This is a type of cake of the Tay ethnic people to welcome the new year, or used in the festival going to the fields.

6.3. Suturing humiliation

This dish is prepared very meticulously, with the presence of ingredients including delicious pork belly and Bac Kan taro according to a family recipe.

6.4 Other types of cakes

Bac Kan has many types of cakes that make visitors extremely excited when they first enjoy them. If the banh gio is delicious, smooth and fragrant, made from plants that burn into smooth white ash, dipped in honey, it becomes a great gift for a hot summer day.

Cooc Mo cake made from upland sticky rice and filled with red peanuts is not boring at all. Meanwhile, wormwood cake is easy to eat, cool. And fragrant, eye-catching with its characteristic wormwood green color.
