1. Where are Mu Cang Chai terraced fields?

Mu Cang Chai terraced fields have an area of about 2,200 hectares in Mu Cang Chai district, Yen Bai province, Vietnam. And spread over 3 communes: La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha, De Xu Phinh. About 161 km west of Yen Bai city and about 295 km northwest of Hanoi capital.

2. How is Mu Cang Chai terraced fields unique?

In 2018, a famous British newspaper (Telegraph) announced the 12 most beautiful terraced fields in the world. Among them, Mu Cang Chai terraced fields is one of two representatives of Vietnam included in this list.

Mu Cang Chai terraced fields are closely associated with the life and customs of the H’Mong people. Due to the lack of flat fields for cultivation, the H’Mong people have taken advantage of each small piece of field broken up on each mountain with an altitude of 800-1,700 meters. Along with conquering nature to survive but Unknowingly, the people here became “artists” creating a majestic “work of art” amidst the vast mountains.

The “irrefutable” evidence for this statement is probably the outstanding event in 2007, when the terraced fields of Mu Cang Chai district were ranked as a national scenic relic.

At the beginning of 2022, this scenic spot was awarded the “Special National Monument” rating. This is truly a precious national heritage. Especially created by “barefoot artists” who are simple indigenous people who have lived here for many generations. They have a special love for Mu Cang Chai that makes many people fall in love as soon as they set foot here during the ripe rice season and the pouring water season.

3. When is the best time to visit Mu Cang Chai terraced fields?

Mu Cang Chai’s climate is famous for being pleasant and cool. So you can enjoy your vacation here at any time of the year. Every new season comes, this land “wears” a new shirt, making everyone surprised, even admiring because it is so wonderful. However, famous as a land of terraced fields, Mu Cang Chai is still at its best at the time when the rice plants begin to grow green and when the rice is ripe and golden.

Mu Cang Chai in the flood season, from May to June

This place has a pure beauty that is as charming as autumn. In the flood season, terraced fields have a wild, simple beauty with the main dark color scheme, true to the mountainous region of Northwest Vietnam. Mu Cang Chai at this time is mixed with the brown color of the land mixed with white clouds. Beside blue sky and sparkling water, reflecting many levels of light.

If during the day, the terraced fields shimmer like gold under the sun, at night they become mysterious under the silver color of the moonlight, covered with layers of water, creating magical patches of light and dark. Making the fields look magical. This place becomes a giant watercolor painting that is hard to compare with anywhere else.

In the fall, around September and October every year

Many tourists come here to admire the terraced fields like sparkling “golden stairs”. Everywhere we see fields in the ripe rice season arranged in layers, each layer spreading across the hills. Especially each layer connected to the other layer as if reaching up to the sky.

Each field planted at a different time creates a different color, some places are golden. But some are green and yellow. Just like that, the colorful fields in Mu Cang Chai stretch across the majestic mountain slopes. That moment is as beautiful as a giant autumn painting, capturing the hearts of tourists who are lucky enough to see it once.

5.1 The surprising beauty of Mu Cang Chai terraced fields

Mu Cang Chai terraced fields would not be so special without the ingenuity, diligence, and hard work of the H’Mong ethnic people. They diligently cleared land, built banks, divided water and turned each hillside into different terraced fields.

Most people who come here are surprised, because in the middle of such a rugged and challenging high mountain area. There is a magnificent and enchantingly beautiful scene of terraced fields.

As expected of being a special national monument, Mu Cang Chai terraced fields have created a monumental art picture hanging on the hillside, giving you moments of satisfaction with the “unique” masterpiece.

5.2 The beauty of Mu Cang Chai terraced fields in different seasons

Simply being terraced fields, Mu Cang Chai has created a strong impression on the stream of people flocking here because of its impressive colors. Although it is the same season of ripe rice, we must admit that the rice color range of the Northwestern mountainous region of Vietnam has a very unique and unmistakable feature.

With each passing season, Mu Cang Chai terraced fields always know how to “put on” their own beauty. If in the summer, that picture is filled with the green color of young rice branches, then when autumn comes, they “transform” into a wave of bright golden ripe rice. The image of a sea of golden rice fields stretching down the valley, layered along the hillside, creating a soft, graceful silk fabric under the gentle sunlight of the highlands is so beautiful.

It’s hard to forget the silhouette of winding terraced fields leaning across the hills in autumn colors. In particular, you need to know a secret that the most ideal time to admire the terraced fields here is at dawn or sunset.

5.3 Cultural experience with the indigenous people here

You may not know the warmth and hospitality of the people here if you do not have the opportunity to actually experience the land and scenery here. Perhaps many people always think about the beautiful Mu Cang Chai with the scent of terraced fields but forget the silent but meaningful appearance of the soul of the H’Mong ethnic people here.

What we want to mention here is their hospitality and enthusiasm for anyone who comes here to visit Mu Cang Chai. For that reason, even if you come here on the coldest days, that warmth will help you dispel the coldness of the mountains.
