1. Where is Hoa An?

Hoa An is a district located in the center of Cao Bang province, Vietnam. It is 15 km northwest of Cao Bang city and about 290 km north of Hanoi capital. With geographical location:

  • The North borders Ha Quang district.
  • The East – North borders Trung Khanh district.
  • The East borders Quang Hoa district.
  • The South borders Thach An district.
  • The West borders Nguyen Binh district.

2. How is Hoa An unique?

This area has an area of about 605.85 km², of which 2/3 of the area is mountainous with an average altitude of about 300 meters above sea level. In Hoa An area, Bang Giang River, De Rao River, and Nhiem River flow through. There are also many lakes here, typically Khuoi Lai lake, Na Tau lake and Khuoi Khoan lake.

4. How to get to Hoa An?

4.1 Moving to Cao Bang

By coach

From Hanoi to Cao Bang, there are many means of transportation from passenger cars, motorbikes. Among them, passenger cars are the most optimal choice in terms of both cost and time. You can also easily find a suitable bus at My Dinh bus station (Hanoi) to Cao Bang thanks to the variety of bus companies and departure times.

By private vehicles

For tourists who want to travel by car or motorbike to fully experience the beautiful roads. They can rent a car in Hanoi to travel to Cao Bang.

Particularly for large tour groups, if you have a driver’s license, you can rent a self-driving car to start the tour.

  • Detailed driving directions for cars: From Hanoi, you can run toward Hanoi – Lang Son highway, then follow National Highway 4 to reach Cao Bang.
  • Detailed directions for motorbikes: Tourists traveling by motorbike can move in the direction of Thanh Tri bridge, onto the Hanoi – Thai Nguyen highway. After that, you continue to take Thai Nguyen – Cho Moi highway to Bac Kan. Then follow National Highway 3 to Phu Thong – Ngan Son – Cao Bang.

To travel by motorbike or car, don’t forget to prepare all the necessary travel items and thoroughly check the vehicle from the rental unit to ensure maximum safety for your long-distance trip.

4.2 From Cao Bang city to Hoa An

From Cao Bang city to Hoa An, the distance is very short, so visitors can catch an intra-province bus, rent a taxi or rent a motorbike to travel to Hoa An.

  • Detailed directions: From Cao Bang city, tourists follow National Highway 3 towards the Northwest for about 6 km, then meet the roundabout at the intersection of intersection 6 and enter provincial road TL203. From here, you go about 9.5 km further along road TL203 northwest to reach Nuoc Hai town, Hoa An district.

5.1 Nam Thoong Stream

Nam Thoong Stream is one of the famous destinations of Hoa An district, Cao Bang province. It is located in Duc Long commune, about 15 km west of the district center.

Nam Thoong Stream is known for its beautiful, fresh and romantic natural scenery. Here, visitors can cool off, relax and admire the scenery, or can also challenge themselves with activities. 5.2 Nguom Boc Cave

Nguom Boc Cave (also known as Dry Cave) is a national historical site located on the western slope of Lam Son mountain range, near Nua village, Hong Viet commune, Hoa An district, Cao Bang province. The cave was ranked as a national historical relic by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2004.

With the design of a karst cave, Nguom Boc Cave is the place to witness many important historical events about our country’s August Revolution. In addition, this is also where Le To’s military workshop lived and worked during the resistance war against the French. Therefore, Nguom Boc Cave has been recognized as one of the important historical relics of Vietnam.

5.3 Na Lu Citadel

Na Lu Citadel is a famous historical site in Cao Bang province. The citadel was built in a four-pillar shape, with a total area of 21,060 m2, located in Hoang Tung commune, Hoa An district. Although it has been through many years and has been destroyed, Na Lu Citadel is still a place worth visiting to learn about the history and culture of Cao Bang.

Looking down from Be Khac Thieu mountain, the landscape of the Na Lu area looks like a very beautiful map, with the shape of a solid king. This place also preserves many remarkable relics such as the citadel foundation, brick kilns, tile kilns, citadel roads and the temple of King Le. These are valuable ruins to explore and learn about the Vietnamese people’s struggle for national independence.

Although much destroyed, Na Lu Citadel still retains the beauty of a precious historical relic. This destination will definitely make visitors feel excited and will bring visitors interesting experiences.

5.4 Thung Mountain (Perforated Mountain)

Thung Mountain (Ngu Lao) is a famous tourist destination in Hoa An, Cao Bang. It’s about 100m above the lake surface, located independently in the middle of the valley and has a huge hole through the mountain, with a diameter of about 35m at its widest point, like a magnificent sculpture. of nature. Thung Mountain was created during the geological tectonic process that took place tens of millions of years ago.

In addition, at the foot of Mount Thung is a large valley, the dry season is where buffaloes and horses freely graze, while the rainy season becomes a clear blue lake up to 15 hectares wide.

Thung Ngu Lao Mountain is considered a masterpiece of nature, unique and extremely rare in the limestone mountain system in Vietnam in particular and in the world in general. It is also a tourist destination that attracts many visitors to visit and explore.

5.5 Da Quan Pagoda

Da Quan Pagoda is one of the famous landmarks of Cao Bang. The pagoda was built in the early 17th century (during the reign of King Can Thong) to worship Mac Ngoc Lien. Da Quan Pagoda has unique architecture, imbued with traditional Vietnamese architectural style, with many beautiful sculptures.

In the temple grounds, there are two bells 4 meters and 5 inches high, 8 meters and 9 inches in circumference, estimated to weigh 1 ton. Two bells hang on both sides of the temple’s attic to worship Princess Hong Lien. The big bell is 1m75 tall and its mouth is 1m07 wide. The small bell is 1m55 high and its mouth is 95cm wide. Both are cast in copper alloy. Every spring and autumn festival, the bells are rung, and the bells ring like thunder, shaking hundreds of miles away.

Da Quan pagoda bell is a precious cultural heritage of the nation, a relic worthy of preservation and transmission. Every year, on January 9, Cao Bang people go to Da District Pagoda to attend festivals and participate in traditional religious and cultural activities. In addition, tourists can also visit Da Quan Pagoda to learn more about local history and culture.

6. Specialties when traveling to Hoa An

When traveling to Hoa An, visitors can not only admire the wild and beautiful natural landscape but also enjoy the specialties of this land.

6.1 Local sausages

Cao Bang pork sausages are meticulously prepared. The filling of the sausage is made from tenderloin and shoulder meat, marinated with spices, honey and indispensable a little white wine, a little ginger and a little ground dried macadamia nuts.

It takes about 2-3 days to dry in the sun and then hang it on the stove. The smoke and heat of the stove are lit from sugarcane to make the meat firmer and tastier. Taking the first bite, feeling the unforgettable taste of Sausages in the Northwest mountains of Vietnam will make you remember this taste.

6.2 Canarium sticky rice

When the weather turns to autumn, Tay – Nung people go to the forest to pick canarium fruits to make sticky rice with canarium. This is an indispensable dish in the meals of Cao Bang people here. Cook sticky rice with ripe fruit, not wormy, soak in water at a temperature of about 25 to 30 degrees Celsius for a while until soft. Take the meat, remove the seeds and mix it with thoroughly mashed sticky rice, turning it purple and pink in color.

6.3 Ant egg cake

Ant Egg Cake is made from glutinous rice flour, ant eggs and young leaves of the fig tree. Every year around April and May, people of the Tay ethnic group in Cao Bang province go to the forest to find black ant eggs to make cakes.

People here often take ant eggs with small bodies and sharp tails, often making nests on vau trees, then bring them home, fry them in lard until fragrant, add a little chives, sprinkle them on the dough and put them in a steaming tray.

Waiting for every moment when the cake is cooked, the aroma of fig leaves is very attractive to visitors when they first enjoy this dish. Taking the first bite, the ant egg cake is chewy and fragrant with the smell of ant eggs, making it hard to resist.

6.4 Sour pho

Sour pho is a Cao Bang specialty. Chewy pho noodles, served with beautiful dark yellow crispy fried pork belly, thinly sliced pork liver, fried pig stomach, roasted duck meat. The dish also has crispy fried shredded chinese potatoes. This is a large, soft and sweet potato found only in Bac Kan and Cao Bang. 6.5 Agarwood fish

Agarwood fish is a famous delicious fish at Ban Gioc waterfall, sold a lot at Trung Khanh market. Clean the fresh fish, cut it open, then stuff onions, dill, chili… inside, wrap it with banana leaves and put it on the charcoal grill. When cooked, the fish emits a delicious aroma.
