3.1. The Gianh River during Trinh Nguyen’s reign

The Gianh River during the Trinh – Nguyen Dynasty (1570 – 1786) was considered the boundary separating Dang Trong and Dang Ngoai. At this time, the wars lasted continuously, reaching nearly half a century. North of the Gianh River is the residence of Lord Trinh – that is, the Ba Don area today. In the south, Lord Nguyen ruled Thuan Hoa district.

Although Dang Trong or Dang Ngoai were both territories of the Le Dynasty, Lord Trinh and Lord Nguyen were considered two feudal powers and considered themselves two separate countries. The power of King Hau Le at this time could not prevent the dispute between the two families, causing our country to be divided for up to 150 years. The legend of the Gianh River dividing the two regions is still closely associated with Vietnamese people in general and Quang Binh people in particular.
