1. Where is the Elephant Mountain complex?

Elephant Mountain is the highest mountain located in An Tien commune, An Lao district, Hai Phong city, Vietnam. It is 20km west of Hai Phong city center and about 99 km southeast of Hanoi capital. Although far from Hai Phong city center, Elephant Mountain still attracts many tourists to visit.

2. How is Elephant Mountain complex unique?

Elephant Mountain includes many populations of rocky mountains and dirt mountains interwoven together and shaped like an elephant. The mountain has a height of 143m and this is the highest mountain in Hai Phong.

This is a famous scenic complex in Hai Phong Port, associated with many historical and cultural values of Vietnam. Elephant Mountain was recognized as a historical relic and national landscape on April 28, 1962.

Elephant Mountain is also associated with the heroic war period of the Vietnamese people as it was a refuge for many soldiers. The reason is that Elephant Mountain has quite rugged terrain and is very suitable for guerrilla tactics. There are still many vestiges left here from the resistance war against France and America.   • Personal vehicle: You can choose a motorbike or car, then move along Highway 5 through Hai Duong to arrive in Hai Phong.

  • Bus: Go to Gia Lam or Giap Bat bus stations, there are many bus routes to Hai Phong, it takes about 1 hour to arrive.

Go to school along National Highway 5 – cross Niem bridge – Truong Chinh – Le Duan – Hoang Thiet Tam – Road 360 – Hoang Quoc Viet. Going straight then turn right onto the right dike road of Lach Tray River, Elephant Mountain will appear before your eyes.

5. Activities and Experiences in Elephant Mountain complex

5.1. Exploring the system of ancient caves

According to recorded archaeological documents, Hai Phong Elephant Mountain is one of the major remaining archaeological works of the Dong Son culture. With the oldest history of about 2,500 years ago in Vietnam.

In addition to the majestic appearance of a giant elephant lying prostrate, Hai Phong Elephant Mountain also possesses many rich caves that still retain their wild and mysterious features. Such as: Long Tien Cave, Nam Tao Cave, Elephant Throat Cave, Carp Cave…are composed of many layers of stalactites and stalagmites.

5.2 Admiring many unique spiritual works

In addition to the rocky mountains and magnificent caves in the Elephant An Lao Mountain relic area, Hai Phong also owns many cultural and spiritual architectural works. Such as Chi Lai communal house and Long Hoa pagoda. Chi Lai Communal House was built with ancient architecture (from the 19th century), all the temples are built of unique and delicate carved wood. Long Hoa Pagoda is a pagoda with a long history, built in the Ly Dynasty in the 11th century. This is known as an ancient cultural architectural work that has been passed down through many generations.

If you come to Elephant Mountain on the full moon day of January every year, you will participate in the Elephant Mountain Festival, this is a very famous traditional festival in Hai Phong. The festival takes place at the temple of female general Le Chan with many solemn rituals, unique musical performances and many attractive folk games.
