4. How to get to Cu Vai village?

4.1 From Hanoi to Tram Tau

From Hanoi we can travel to Tram Tau by motorbike or bus. If you choose to ride a motorbike, you follow the Thang Long route to Highway 21 in Son Tay, reach Khe Pass, then continue along Nghia Lo Street to reach Tram Tau. Remember to note that the roads here are mainly mountain roads, bumpy and difficult to drive, so you must have a very steady handle and be well prepared to go.

If traveling by bus, you can go to My Dinh station to catch a bus to Nghia Lo. After arriving, we just need to rent a motorbike to Tram Tau and explore. If you don’t know where to rent a motorbike, you can ask the locals for directions.

4.2 From Tram Tau to Cu Vai Village

Starting from Tram Tau town, visitors follow provincial road TL174 about 2 km northeast and reach a fork. You turn left and continue moving about 7 km north to reach Cu Vai village.

From Tram Tau town to Cu Vai, you can travel by motorbike or by trekking. However, be careful while moving because the road is quite steep and difficult to walk. The road to Cu Vai is now much easier than before, 90% of it is flat concrete road. But the slope up to the village is still winding, making many tourists find it a bit challenging to go up a long slope.

The final slope is about 500m and the road in the middle of the village has not been completed. But that cannot hinder the journey to this village of tourists from near and far.

With motorbikes and 5- and 7-seat cars, you can still reach the village normally. Before going, you need to check the fuel and brake the car well so you can move to your destination. If you are not brave enough to drive, you can contact a local motorbike taxi to pick you up and take you from the outside road to the village.

6. Specialties when traveling to Cu Vai village

The issue of eating when coming to Cu Vai village is also a question for those who come here for the first time. And in Cu Vai there is only a small grocery store and an indigenous restaurant. If you go in a group, you can call and order dishes in advance as a group with local products such as chicken, pork, rice, etc. If you go alone, you can also eat with a local family. Whatever you eat, it’s very filling and an enjoyable experience.

If you want to enjoy the specialties of Yen Bai, you can enjoy them at restaurants in Tram Tau town.

6.1 Smoked buffalo meat

Smoked buffalo meat is made from fresh pieces of buffalo meat. Mountain buffaloes are grazed naturally, eating grass and forest leaves, so their meat is firm and sweet. Buffalo meat, after being marinated with typical Northwest spices such as Mac Khen and wild chili, will be dried on a wood stove or put in the oven. Dried buffalo meat is packaged in half a kilogram or 1kg and is easy to preserve, so tourists often buy it as gifts.

6.2 Grilled chicken with mac mat leaves

Walking around Mu Cang Chai market, visitors will immediately be attracted by the attractive aroma emanating from grilled chicken shops. Northwest chicken is carefully marinated with spices, hook honey leaves are stuffed into the stomach and then grilled on a charcoal stove. The chicken is grilled whole so it retains its natural sweetness. The chicken meat is firm but not chewy. When eaten with Cham Dao, it is “delicious and forgetful”.

6.3 Bamboo shoots rolled with meat

Bamboo shoots are available in many places, but Yen Bai bamboo shoots are still considered the most delicious and sweet. Bamboo shoot season lasts from December to March every year. Traveling to Yen Bai at this time, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy bamboo shoots rolled with meat – a Yen Bai specialty and also the pride of the people here.

6.4 Ant egg sticky rice

Each locality in the Northwest offers visitors a different specialty. In Mu Cang Chai, that specialty is ant egg sticky rice. When spring comes, it is also the time when black ants lay eggs. People of the Tay, Dao, and Thai ethnic groups in Yen Bai go to the forest to find ant eggs to cook sticky rice. Mu Cang Chai upland sticky rice combined with Northwest forest ant eggs creates a specialty that visitors will remember once they eat.

6.5 Yen Bai Sausage

Besides buffalo meat, sausage is also a Yen Bai specialty that many people choose to buy as a gift. Sausage is made from delicious pork, marinated with rich spices. A secret to making delicious sausages of the Yen Bai people is to use firewood with fragrant essential oils such as cinnamon wood to add flavor to the dish.
