What is the special of Bay Canh Islet?

Bay Canh Islet is one of the two biggest islets in the Con Dao Island complex (it has a total 16 islets). It is in the East of Con Son Islet and has an area of 683 hecta. This islet also has 2 islets connecting together by a sand dune called Big Sand Beach. Factually, Bay Canh islet is the spot among the large sea in Con Dao and all the islets covered by tropical forest.

This place has long been zoned as a place for ecological restoration, which is strictly protected to ensure the biodiversity of the island. The rich nature has given this place an ecosystem with many different species, from coral reefs, seaweeds, sea grasses, to pearls, snails, sea cucumbers, and fish living in the coral reefs.

Big Sand Beach – the impression on Bay Canh Islet

Bai Cat Lon (Big Sand Beach) is the site with the highest number of turtles laying eggs within 14 spawning grounds of Con Dao and also the most in Vietnam. Each year, hundreds of mother turtles come here to lay eggs. The peak of the breeding season is from April to September yearly, each day it can reach up to 20-30 mother turtles ashore to nest and lay eggs.

Primary mangrove ecosystem in Bay Canh Islet

It is rare when Bay Canh Islet still keeps the primary forest beauties while deforestation is happening more and more as nowadays. The ecosystem of the mangro forest is found on the sand ground and the coral reefs at the area of Bo Dap. Its area is around 5.1 hecta. Although it is not big, it shows its natural diversity.

According to the statistics, Bay Canh Islet of Con Dao Island has 882 flora and about 150 fauna. Together with the ecosystems of the tropical rain forest on high, the ecosystem of seagrass, the coral reefs, this mangrove ecosystem has created a very complete connection to the ecosystem.

Con Dao Lighthouse

Lie on the Northeast of Bay Canh Islet is a lighthouse which was built by France from 1884. And this lighthouse still serves until today and is one of the attractions to tourists. It will bring you the panorama of the sea and Con Dao scenery.

What are activities on Bay Canh Islet?

Nature blesses this islet for the system of ecology with different types from coral reefs, fish, sea grass, pearl, etc. Therefore, these coral reefs are the habitat of many different fish and sea creatures.

Start the trip from the centre of Con Dao Island to reach Bay Canh Islet, you should travel by boat, cruise or canoe under the schedule of Visitor Center Con Dao National Park or local people. You should not travel by yourself to reach this islet

The time to visit the islet

You need to pre-book tours at the homestay, hotel or resort   where you are staying or Vietnam travel company to arrange the suitable time and have the appropriate guide. Because sightseeing activities also depend on the capacity of the natural conservation environment. During the day, the maximum environmental capacity of 48 people per visit. At night, the number of visiting people is about 20 to 25 people.

You must have a life jacket while visiting the islet. As for snorkeling glass you can hire at National Park centre if you not prepare it before

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Con Dao Islands is during the dry season from November to February. However, if you would like to see turtles nesting on Hon Bay Canh Island, you should visit between June and September.

And from February till July is the ideal time for diving excursions when the waters around Con Dao have visibility averaging between 20 and 30 metres.
