1. Where is Bao Thang?

Bao Thang is a valley in the ancient land, along both sides of the Red River and located in the middle of Lao Cai province, about 30 km southeast of Lao Cai city and about 270 km northwest of Hanoi capital. The district capital is Pho Lu town.

To the west of Bao Thang are the low mountains of the Fansipan and Pu Luong ranges and to the east of Bao Thang are the upstream ranges of the Chay River. Nicknamed “Bao Thang Gate”, this place has both a river and a railway running through it, convenient for traffic and economic and tourism development here.

  • The East borders Bac Ha district and Bao Yen district.
  • To the West, it borders Sa Pa town, Lao Cai city and Hekou district, Yunnan province, China (with a border of 6.7 km)
  • The South borders Van Ban district
  • The North borders Muong Khuong district.

Up to now, Bao Thang district has up to 13 ethnic groups living together and integrating with each other, of which the largest are the Kinh, Dao and Tay ethnic groups. 3. When is the best season to visit Bao Thang – Lao Cai?

4.1. Means of transportation

Passenger car: Lao Cai is the economic, trade and tourism center of the Northwest region, so the Hanoi – Lao Cai traffic route is always focused on investment. There are many buses departing from Hanoi to Lao Cai, you can catch the bus from bus stations such as My Dinh, Giap Bat, Gia Lam. From seat buses, sleeper buses to limousines, all are operating very actively to serve the travel needs of tourists. After arriving in Lao Cai city, you continue to ride a motorbike, taxi or intra-province bus to reach Bao Thang.

Train: Train is a fairly economical and safe means of transportation. The distance from Hanoi to Lao Cai by rail is about 320km. Travel time is from 8 to 9 hours. From Hanoi station to Lao Cai every day there are 3 trains: LC3, SP1 and SP3. After arriving in Lao Cai city, you continue to ride a motorbike, taxi or intra-province bus to reach Bao Thang.

4.2. The ways from Hanoi to Bao Thang

If traveling by personal vehicle, there are 2 routes for you to choose from when traveling from Hanoi to Lao Cai as follows:

Route 1: Only for cars, take Noi Bai – Lao Cai highway. From the inner city, you pass Thang Long bridge, turn onto the highway and keep going straight to reach Bao Thang – Lao Cai. On the way, you will pass through Vinh Phuc and Phu Tho provinces.

Route 2: This route can be used by both cars and motorbikes. From Hanoi, you follow Lang Hoa Lac street, turn onto Highway 21 to Son Tay, cross Trung Ha bridge to Phong Chau, from there continue along Route 70 to reach Bao Thang – Lao Cai.

5. Top sightseeing & things to do in Bao Thang – Lao Cai

5.1. Ban Cam Market

Ban Cam Market has the nuance of a highland market, where goods are exchanged for people to produce themselves and most of the sales stalls are built by the people themselves, covered with tarpaulins and displayed on the ground. Although it is a small market, Ban Cam market is quite crowded and has many diverse and high-quality products.

5.2. Phong Nien Market

Similar to Ban Cam market, Phong Nien market also has the typical culture of the Northwest high mountains. The image of people gathering and selling self-produced goods still dominates the markets. Co Ba Temple is a temple dedicated to a figure in the Three Palaces Mother Goddess religion in Vietnam and has existed for hundreds of years. Every year, Bao Thang people often come to worship and people pray for peace on the second month and the 7th day of the 7th lunar month. Co Ba Temple has been recognized as a provincial cultural and historical relic, preserved and promoted its cultural heritage value and associated with tourism development.

5.6. Suoi Mo tourist area

Coming to Suoi Mo tourist area, the open space in front of you with impressive natural landscapes surrounded by forests helps visitors feel comfortable and airy. The winding stream flows through vertical waterfalls with white foam, creating a majestic natural landscape. Located right next to Highway 70, Phong Hai waterfall (Bao Thang). It’s like a soft, sparkling silver strip of white silk. It is said that that silk ribbon is as soft as a young girl’s hair and that her hair is embedded with many marbles.

The waterfall is about 4 – 6m high, about 10 m wide and hidden in the green of the forest. Although low, the water flow is not gentle but flows down from above, hitting the rocks at the foot of the waterfall, creating thousands of white bubbles.
