4. Discovering the unique beauty of Bao Dai Palaces

4.1. Palace I Da Lat – King Palace

Palace I Da Lat is also famous as King Palace – Bao Dai Palace 1. Built in 1929 by a French official Robert Clément Bourgery. From 1949 – 1955, this place became the headquarters of King Bao Dai during his time as Head of State. By 1956, the Ngo Dinh Diem government used this place exclusively for the President

Bao Dai Palace 1 is 4 km east-south of Da Lat city center. In the past, the king chose this place to become the main working place for officials. Palace 1 has a total area of ​​about 60 hectares, located on a hill 1550m above sea level, surrounded by a vast beautiful pine forest.

When you come to Palace 1, you will be impressed with the entrance to the Palace which is a paved road with two rows of tall, ancient cajuput trees, creating a romantic, peaceful scene. The ancient villa was repainted to match the original color used by King Bao Dai. In front is a large flower garden.

This is a famous tourist destination with unique architecture and long-standing historical significance associated with the life of King Bao Dai.

4.2. Palace II Dalat – Luxurious mansion amidst pine hills.

Palace II Dalat is famous by another name, Palace of the Governors. Built in 1933 and completed in 1937 by talented French architects, it has a strong French architectural style.

The palace is located on a 1540m high hill, has a total of 25 rooms, luxuriously designed in European style. The interior of the mansion is decorated extremely eye-catchingly. Palace 2 used to be the headquarters for the French ruling apparatus in Indochina, and was the venue for the most important meetings at that time.

This is the first project in Vietnam to use washed stone – an ancient type of sedimentary stone with high bearing capacity and durability while still ensuring rich colors and designs. In addition, parts made from traditional Vietnamese wood are replaced with fine metals brought from France.

When you arrive at the gate of Palace 2, you will be surprised at the grounds of this mansion. A circular fountain surrounded by a colorful flower garden creates a romantic, “sky-lit” space.

It is worth visiting Bao Dai palaces in Da Lat

Furthermore, the mansion’s campus is spacious and surrounded by colorful flowers mixed with cool green pine hills. From a distance, Palace 2 looks like a magnificent castle located in the middle of a pine forest.

When standing on the top of the hill, visitors can see the entire romantic beauty of Xuan Huong Lake or Langbiang – the roof of the city of thousands of flowers hidden in the mist.

Especially, below the mansion is a large basement used to store wine. You will have to go through a secret tunnel designed by the Governor of Indochina Decoux to ensure safety in the event of an incident. You will definitely be overwhelmed by the poetic and nostalgic scenery here.

Palace 2 Da Lat is now a guest house of the People’s Committee of Lam Dong province and regularly organizes events, conferences, and welcomes VIP guests, so visitors are limited. Please remember to contact the management directly before visiting the mansion.

4.3. Palace III Dalat

Palace III was built in the period 1933 – 1938 and designed by two French architects Paul Veysseyre and Huynh Tan Phat – Vietnamese architects. This is where King Bao Dai and his family lived and worked. The special thing is that only Queen Nam Phuong can stay here regularly, while the other concubines only visit and do not stay overnight.

Bao Dai Palace 3 was built with 2 floors with 25 rooms. The design style is more modern and luxurious than other mansions. This is the most famous mansion, every year the mansion welcomes a number of domestic and foreign tourists to visit. When visiting the palace, you can see Xuan Huong Lake about 1 km away from the palace.

Entering Palace 3, you will admire the ancient, but extremely attractive French architecture, along with the meticulously decorated and preserved items of the ancient kings’ time.
