1. Where is An Ma Temple?

An Ma Temple is located on An Ma island in the middle of Ba Be Lake. Ba Be Lake is in Ba Be National Park, Nam Mau commune, Ba Be district, Bac Kan province, Vietnam. About 70 km northwest of Bac Kan city and about 240 km north of Hanoi capital.

2. How is An Ma temple unique?

An Ma Island is a limestone island, shaped like a turtle’s shell, rising about 30m high in the middle of Ba Be Lake. The whole island is covered with green trees. It is a convenient place to observe the lake landscape and birds and animals. The temple worships Buddha, Mother Goddess Thuong Ngan, Lord Son Trang, Saint Tran,…

Legend has it that the Temple is also a place to worship loyal mandarins of the Mac dynasty during the feudal war during the Le Mac dynasty. After being defeated, they ran to Puong cave and committed suicide there.

To commemorate the loyal mandarins, the local people built a temple to worship the Mac family. But fearing retaliation from the Le Dynasty’s military officials, they changed the name to the temple of the Ma family. An Ma in the Tay ethnic language means “beautiful peaceful grave” the resting place of Mac family loyalists.

3. When is the best time to visit An Ma Temple?

Ba Be Lake has both heavenly beauty and a cool temperate climate all year round. Each season, this place has its own beauty that makes visitors admire it.

If spring is the Long Tong festival season of the Tay people, you will enjoy the bustling atmosphere of interesting folk activities and games taking place on the 9th – 10th days of the first lunar month. Such as boat racing, singing, dancing, archery, wrestling ,…You will have more regional cultural experiences when having fun with local people.

Summer from May to September is the time to attract tourists to come here. In order to avoid the sweltering heat in urban areas, the cool fresh air in the mountains, forests, and pristine lakes will dispel them.

4. How to get to An Ma temple?

4.1 Moving To Bac Kan City

Nearly 200 km from the capital Hanoi, you can easily travel to Bac Kan city by many means. Such as motorbikes, cars, and buses.

4.1.1 Traveling by private vehicles

This is quite a popular choice for travelers who want to be proactive and comfortable during their trip. You just have the opportunity to conquer the ideal road, with poetic scenery. However, you need to control your speed and obey traffic laws to ensure safety.

4.1.2 Traveling by coach

Passenger cars will be a fairly safe and fast choice. At Yen Nghia or My Dinh bus station, you can easily catch bus companies going to Bac Kan city with many different departure times.

4.1.3 Traveling by plane

For tourists in the Central or Southern region of Vietnam, you can choose a bus. Or more quickly and conveniently, you can choose a plane to Hanoi. Then moving to Bac Kan city by road.

4.2 Moving To Ba Be Tourist Area

If traveling by personal means, you can follow the instructions of Google map or follow the reference route below.

From Hanoi, you follow the Hanoi – Thai Nguyen highway -> turn to National Highway 3. Keep going to the intersection with TL 268 -> turn left and move towards Dinh Hoa (Chu Market). Then moving along TL 254 Go to Bang Lung ( Cho Don) -> continue going about 40 km to Ba Be Lake.

After arriving at Ba Be Lake, you or your group will go on a pre-booked tour or rent a boat to travel the lake. During the journey, you will visit many tourist attractions, including An Ma temple on An Ma island.

5. Exploring the beauty of An Ma Temple

An Ma is a limestone archipelago, located in the second lake, called Pe Lu in the Tay ethnic language, about 30m above the lake level. An Ma island is shaped like a horse wading in water, with a turtle-shaped cupped shell. The whole island is covered with green plants, making it a convenient place to observe the lake landscape.

An Ma Temple is an ancient temple made of wood and roofed with dragon scale tiles with a length of 9m and a width of 6m. Restored and rebuilt in 2006, An Ma Temple has a simple, gentle, elegant character, blending with nature. The skillfully and elaborately carved lines partly express the ideas and concepts of the local people. It is associated with historical circumstances in each period.

An Ma Temple is a place of religious activities for local people, tourists from all over. It is also a place for the Ba Be Spring Festival held on the 10th day of the first lunar month every year.

An Ma Temple Festival is held on the 6th day of the second lunar month every year. Local people know the sacredness of An Ma temple. On the first day of the lunar month, people often go to the island to burn incense to pray for wealth, fortune, and family peace and happiness.

8. Some Other Famous Tourist Attractions Near An Ma Temple

8.1 Pac Ngoi Village

Continuing with the tour to explore Ba Be Lake, you should visit Pac Ngoi village. Pac Ngoi village is on the banks of the Leng River and close to Ba Be Lake. Coming to Pac Ngoi village, you will have the opportunity to exchange and learn about the Tay ethnic people’s culture.

8.3 Tat Ma Waterfall

Tat Ma Waterfall is located in Hoang Tri commune and is in the buffer zone of Ba Be national park. From our experience traveling to Ba Be Lake, we tell you an ideal place to see the panoramic view of Tat Ma waterfall. Which is from the top of Khau Vang pass.

Standing at the top of Khau Vang pass, you can capture the entire majestic image of the white silk strip of Tat Ma Waterfall. You can also go directly to Tat Ma waterfall to experience soaking in the cool water.

8.4 Fairy Pond (Ao Tien)

If you are looking for a beautiful photo location during your trip to Ba Be Lake. Come immediately to Ao Tien. Ao Tien is located near Ba Be Lake, you only need to walk about 100m to get there.

Legend has it that Fairy Pond is where beautiful fairies descend to play and cool off. Perhaps that is why the indigenous people call this place Ao Tien. Fairy Pond is like a magic mirror reflecting the silhouettes of all things on the clear water surface. You can freely take photos with the picturesque Fairy Pond.

8.5 Nang Tien Cave (Fairy Cave)
