1. Where is Can Cau Market?

Can Cau market is located in Can Cau commune, Si Ma Cai district, Lao Cai province, Vietnam. About 82 km northeast of Lao Cai city and about 312 km northwest of Hanoi capital.

2. How is the Cau market unique?

Can Cau market is an annual market of the H’Mong Hoa, Giay and Dao ethnic groups. It is often held periodically every Saturday or on holidays throughout the year. The market is usually held from early morning until late afternoon.

Can Cau Market was established at a time no one knew. But every Saturday, this market became a place for local people to trade brocade items, food, handicrafts,…

It’s one of two big markets that retains the beauty of a fair in Lao Cai. Although the atmosphere of Can Cau market is not equal to Bac Ha market. But every time Can Cau market is opened. Many tourists participating in Sapa tours are not afraid to go far to the market to visit.

The campus of Can Cau market is more than 1 hectare. It’s located on the hillside. The whole market looks like 5 terraced fields standing on a unique road. Connecting Bac Ha market with Si Ma Cai town, Lao Cai province. Each plot is a display of many diverse colors.

3. When is the best time to visit Can Cau market?

The best time to visit Can Cau market is from September to November every year. Because, if you go during this time, you can visit Si Ma Cai to see the beautiful buckwheat fields.

Furthermore, this is also the time when the terraced fields shine a shiny yellow color when the rice season is ripe.

At the same time, during this time, the weather in Sapa is quite dry and cool. It is suitable for you to travel and be able to experience going to many other villages.

4. How to get to Can Cau market?

The closest and easiest way from Hanoi to Can Cau market is to go to Bac Ha town first. After that, you continue to move from Bac Ha, and then to Can Cau market.

4.1 From Hanoi To Bac Ha

4.1.1 By passenger car

If you depart from Hanoi to Bac Ha, the best way to choose is to take a sleeper bus. Because the journey is quite long and you will need to sleep and rest during the journey. You can easily catch buses at My Dinh bus station in Hanoi. With a distance of nearly 300 km from Hanoi to Bac Ha. The travel time will take nearly 7 hours by car.

4.1.2 By train

Taking the night train arrives at Lao Cai station then takes a bus going to Bac Ha. The distance from Lao Cai to Bac Ha is about 60 km.

4.2 From Bac Ha To Can Cau Market

Starting from the center of Bac Ha town. You go along provincial road DT153 north about 19 km and you will reach Can Cau market. The road is not too far and quite easy to go. You just need to go straight along DT153 and cannot miss this market. Because it is located next to the road.

5. Activities and experiences at Can Cau market

There are 3 stalls for sale of local handicrafts and specialties. Such as brocades, herbs, vegetables, handicrafts, etc., The remaining two plots sell ethnic minority dishes: corn wine, nuggets, victories. And household appliances like flashlights, brushes, pots, pans, cups, bowls,…

5.1 Strolling around the area selling colorful brocade items

5.2 Exploring the extremely busy buffalo market

Buffalo market is another name for Can Cau market. Because this is where dozens to hundreds of buffaloes are traded each market session. Every weekend, you will easily see images of buffaloes from all corners. Such as Bac Ha, Si Ma Cai, Ha Giang, Muong Khuong, etc. Their owners take them to the market to find opportunities to trade or sell them.

In particular, to show the health and strength of the buffaloes. Local people often organize extremely attractive buffalo fighting festivals to compete for strength. Coming here, you will be immersed in an extremely vibrant and bustling atmosphere like the festival season.

6. Specialty dishes when traveling to Can Cau market
