2. How is Truc Lam Bach Ma Zen Monastery unique?

Venerable Master Thuong Thanh Ha Tu is the founder and builder of Truc Lam Hue Zen Monastery. This is the first Zen monastery in the Central region originating from the Truc Lam Yen Tu sect.

In 1932, a French explorer discovered two unique destinations in Hue: Truoi Dam and Bach Ma Mountain. About 13 years later, Bach Ma city was built with more than 140 luxury villas, giving this land a unique architectural beauty in the French style. At the same time, people also built many public works. It includes post offices, roads, schools, stations, markets and many other utilities, serving the life of the local community.

After the war, this land seemed to have gradually sunk into oblivion, everything only existed in the memories of the people of Hue. However, today, Bach Ma is gradually emerging strongly with a new look, along with the Truc Lam Hue Zen monastery tourist area, contributing to creating more vitality for this spiritual land.

When standing on the top of the Zen monastery, you will be able to see the shimmering, magical lake surface like a giant jade mirror, illuminating the charming landscape of clouds and sky. Just step down to the boat wharf then pass 172 steps, you will reach the three-entrance gate. Coming here, you will freely experience the peaceful atmosphere in a fairyland, temporarily escaping from the hustle and bustle of life.

3. Architecture of Truc Lam Bach Ma Zen Monastery

The Tam Quan gate at the monastery includes a main gate and two side paths. Each aisle has its own meaning, with the side aisle on the right for civil officials and the small aisle on the left for military officials.

Especially, the middle path is only for invited monarchs and politicians. To have the opportunity to admire the image of the majestic Tam Quan gate amidst the blue sky, people must pass 172 stone steps.

Besides, the bell tower is designed in the traditional architectural style of pagodas and temples, with two floors and eight curved roofs. People also decorated everywhere with extremely vivid flowers and dragon images, making visitors unable to take their eyes off.

Truc Lam Hue Zen Pagoda is divided into three main areas:

  • The outer courtyard is the main shrine, where Buddha is worshiped sitting under the Bodhi tree.
  • Behind the main hall is the area to worship Patriarch Dat Ma.
  • The monastery is a place of practice for male Buddhists and male monks
  • The nunnery is exclusively for female Buddhists and nuns

The space inside the monastery is spacious and airy, the upper door is blocked by bars, and a table door about half a meter high separates the outside hallway and inside the house. This is an example of the sophistication of traditional Vietnamese architecture, helping guests come to the house more thoughtfully, not going straight in but having to lift their feet to go through the table.

Despite wearing a majestic, solid coat, the project still retains its elegant beauty, like a pristine lotus flower lying quietly in the heart of Truoi Lake.
