The above mentioned five famous cellars of the old Thang Long citadel. They are Cau Giay, Cau Den, Dong Mac, Cho Dua and Quan Chuong. But only the Quan Chuong is still alive with time to this day and bearing many historical marks of the old city.
How O Quan Chuong is unique?
The beautiful appearance of the only remaining window in Hanoi reminds of the years of the encircled city.
Walk through the main arched entrance of O Quan Chuong and imagine yourself as one of the brave warriors who have fought to defend the city from this place in many rounds, as well as in the war against the French and against America. Watching the curved roof of the middle tower and facing the yellow star flag – the national flag of Vietnam – is flying in the wind.
Built in 1749, this is the last remaining gateway to the cellars around the city. This place was called O Quan Chuong to commemorate the military leader who sacrificed himself when fighting the French in that place in 1843. This gate once again played an important role in the fight against France from 1946 to 1947.
Note that this gateway is also a strategic military point in the anti-American war, many aircraft guns have been placed here. Although it has been remodeled several times, but this box still retains its original shape and structure.
Main entrance of the gate overlooking the east, toward the Red River. When approaching, visitors will feel the height of the entrance to the arch. The gate is 3 m high and has two floors.
The upper level has a gray tower with traditional curved roofs. When closer, visitors will see a small stone. This stone was erected in 1882, engraved the ban on the perpetrator harassing people through the cell door.
Continue to visit the smaller walkways on either side of the main entrance to the center of Hanoi Old Quarter. It’s a great for Hanoi food walking tours, you can visit the fruit market and fresh vegetables and beautiful handmade silk goods at great prices.
Quan Chuong is located at Hang Chieu – Dao Duy Tu intersection, just north of Hoan Kiem Lake. But don’t forget to check out article for all things need to know before travel Hanoi by Origin Vietnam.
