Cu Da Ancient Village

About 20 km from the centre of Hanoi to the west, Cu Da ancient village in Cu Khe commune, the northernmost commune of Thanh Oai district, Hanoi. It is one of the ancient traditional villages from ancient times.

Located on the banks of the peaceful Nhue River. Cu Da village still retains the intact Vietnamese village’s imprint with communal roofs, banyan trees, water wharves. Especially the sharp French architecture. And, not only famous for its unique cultural space. But Cu Da ancient village is also known to tourists for its traditional craft of making vermicelli and making soy sauce.

With dozens of houses designed according to the typical architecture of the Northern Delta interspersed with houses built according to French architecture. Many front porch houses are covered with hoods, doors and intricately carved details. Over the years, the many plaques have peeled off the lime and mortar, leaving the red brick layer still fresh. Here, visitors seem to go back hundreds of years ago.

Strolling along the village road, visitors will find two-story houses with French colonial style. From the outside, it stands out and features a unique arched porch, the above is decorated with unique embossed motifs, delicate sweet patterns to every detail.

Coming to Cu Da, visitors not only can discover the ancient features of sitting in the village. But also witness with their own eyes the process of making vermicelli. Especially making soy sauce are traditional products of Cu Da ancient village.

On sunny days, along the streets of Cu Da village, waves are full of the yellow colour of vermicelli. From a distance, the whole village seems to be dressed in a fanciful iridescent yellow. The vermicelli hanging on the porch droop, sparkling like silk threads in the autumn sun.

If you come here in the morning, you will find the bustling scene of the people here. The man carried the vermicelli and guarded it on the wooden benches on the side of the road, the man brought the vermicelli to dry, the other carried it to deliver. Life is simple but full of joy.

Tuong Cu Da – Ca Lang Dam

Perhaps the people of the capital, as well as the whole country, know the delicious and delicious popularity of Tuong Cu Da through the song “Tuong Cu Da – Ca village”. The profession of making traditional soy sauce in Cu Da has been around for many generations, a kind of soy sauce with a characteristic and attractive scent. Tuong Cu Da is made from four main ingredients: soybeans, sticky rice, rainwater and white salt.

It takes the hands of the Cu Da people to make jars of soy sauce to taste and be delicious. Tuong made from April to August is the best. Because the weather is favourable, the sunshine makes the batches more delicious and smelly.

  • Hat-making village: The famous Chuong village is relatively close to Hanoi, about 40 km to the west, in the direction of Thanh Oai.
  • Boi Khe Charm: An ancient temple with great cultural and historical value.
  • Binh Da Village: About 20 km from the centre. There is a communal house worshipping Lac Long Quan and a foreign house worshipping Ly Lang Cong and Ly Thai Tong’s son (1028-1054).

How to get there?

Between high-rise buildings, newly painted walls are the depression of red brick walls with moss-coloured roofs.

The number of old houses in the village is very small now, the village gate is the same, the village head and the end of the village have been renewed, only the gate between the village remains. The old house in the village now has 4-5 houses. They are Mr Sung’s, the French old house of Mrs Hong’s, Hieu De village, Mr Nhu Lai’s house, Xom Chua 3, Mr Dan’s house.

Personal vehicles (motorbike, car):

Take Provincial Highway 70A to Cau Buou and turn on. The Cu Da railway bridge is more than 100 meters long across the Nhue River, connecting Ta Thanh Oai commune with Huu Hoa commune.

By Bus:

Nearest bus stop: You take bus route 62 (Yen Nghia bus station – Thuong Tin) then move by motorbike taxi to get into Cu Da village.
