4.1 From HaNoi to Ha Giang city

Currently, there are many passenger buses and sleeper buses running from Hanoi – Ha Giang with many different time frames. You can catch a bus at My Dinh bus station or pick-up points on the road if the bus passes by (contact the bus company in advance). Usually, departure buses will depart in the evening, to save travel time as well as have more daylight time to visit.

4.2 From Ha Giang city to Hoang Su Phi

Once you arrive in Ha Giang city, you can rent a motorbike to travel to Hoang Su Phi. Tourists can refer to the route below: Go against National Highway 2 to Tan Quang then turn onto DT177 road to go to Hoang Su Phi or you can go in the direction of Thanh Thuy border gate and then go through Tay Con Linh mountain to Hoang Su Phi.

Currently, some tourists use motorbikes to travel from Hanoi to Hoang Su Phi. Although using a motorbike is quite strenuous, in return you will be able to admire the majestic mountain scenery and poetic nature along the way. A convenient route that you can refer to is following National Highway 2 to Hoang Su Phi. When returning, you can turn to visit Xin Man, Bac Ha and then take Yen Bai road to return to Hanoi.

5. Exploring the beauty of terraced fields in Hoang Su Phi

Perhaps what brings Hoang Su Phi closer to tourists is the beauty of the terraced fields. Just like Mu Cang Chai in the ripe rice season, the scenery of Hoang Su Phi is dyed a brilliant yellow color of ripe rice. 5.1 Ban Phung Terraced Fields

Ban Phung is a commune located near the border with China. From the center of Vinh Quang town, you have to follow a small mountain pass about 30 km to cross the mountain to reach the commune center.

Without wide valleys such as Cao Pha or Muong Hoa, terraced fields in Ban Phung are crouched on steep slopes. Along with Ban Luoc, this is the place with the highest terraced fields in Vietnam.

5.2 Ho Thau Terraced Fields

Ho Thau is a commune of Hoang Su Phi, about 16 km from Nam Tich intersection. Terraced fields in Ho Thau of the Red Dao ethnic people. The people here have a custom: with a small clearing around each field to keep the land from landslides.

6. Specialties when traveling to terraced fields in Hoang Su Phi

Hoang Su Phi converges all the special delicacies of Ha Giang region that you cannot ignore such as amaranth, young porridge, braised rice, blue rice, kitchen buffalo meat, etc. However, this place is still famous for dishes made from mouse meat of La Chi ethnic people with many different variations such as grilled rats, stir-fried mice, kitchen rats, etc. Mice are soft and fragrant, rich in flavor from the typical mountain and forest materials. So it’s a harmonious whole.

There is also a dish of black pork – a local breed of the Dao and H’ mong people, Ha Giang. Due to being naturally grazed, pork is firmer, with less fat and more nutrients than conventional varieties. People here prefer grilled black pork dish because of its aroma and special soft sweetmeat

6.1 Lam Rice (Bamboo Tube Rice)

The technique of preparing lam rice is very simple. The ingredients are sticky rice that is thoroughly soaked, the cooking water is usually clear underground water veins, put into a bamboo tube and then covered with banana leaves. People use young trees, tube stems, bamboo families, each bamboo stem cuts off one end of the tube, the other end acts like the bottom of the pot.

Wash the glutinous rice, sprinkle a little salt, mix well, put the rice into the bamboo tube, pour the amount of water approximately to the surface of the rice. Seal the mouth of the tube with fresh arrowroot leaves or dried banana leaves, then grill it. Heat the bamboo tube with rice over a fire or on a pile of embers, slowly rotating it while heating to apply the heat evenly around the tube shell.

About an hour or so later (depending on how big or small the rice tube is), the fragrant smell of sticky rice emanates, which is a sign that the rice is cooked.

6.2 Thang Co

It would be a big mistake if you travel to Hoang Su Phi – Ha Giang without enjoying Thang Co specialties. This is a delicious dish cooked from buffalo, horse or cow organs. Thang Co is delicious when it’s still hot. You should also add a little salt and soup powder to make it more palatable.
