As the name suggested, Tam Coc includes three natural caves: Hang Ca, Hang Hai and Hang Ba. These caves were created by the transformation of seawater, rainwater and geology. Those transformations have worn cliffs in a long period of millions of years. All of them are located on Ngo Dong River.
Hang Ca – the the first cave and the largest of 3 caves, it is 127 meters long and its mouth is 20 meters wide. The second cave – Hang Hai – is 60 meters long and has a lot of flats, horizontal stalactites. It takes about 10 minutes from the first cave to the second cave. King Le Hien Tong had named the pagoda “Bach ngoc thach son dong” in 1740.
It means the pagoda was made of beautiful stones like a sapphire in a remote place. And in 1773, Nguyen Nghiem – father of Nguyen Du, one of the greatest poets of Viet Nam – has renamed this pagoda into “Bich Dong”. It means “green grotto”
